Amplifying Voices: Why Gender-Affirming Care and Community Support are Essential

Today, on Trans Day of Visibility, The Mosaic Project of South Texas proudly shares our participation in this year’s PSA video highlighting transgender visibility, affirmation, and support. Featuring voices from our community leaders—including Pride Corpus Christi board members Ema Rodriguez, Kitana Sanchez, Vice President Robert Kymes, and President Jonathan Swindle—the video underscores the critical need for visible, vocal, and unequivocal support for transgender individuals.

Research consistently reveals that gender-affirming care significantly improves mental health outcomes and overall quality of life for transgender people. According to the Trevor Project’s National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, transgender and non-binary youth who reported having their pronouns respected by those around them attempted suicide at half the rate of those whose pronouns were not respected.

Furthermore, studies published by the American Medical Association show that transgender individuals who have access to gender-affirming healthcare report significantly lower rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Despite these well-documented benefits, gender-affirming care continues to be attacked legislatively across Texas and the nation, putting countless lives at risk.

The Mosaic Project of South Texas stands firmly against these attacks, advocating tirelessly for comprehensive, compassionate gender-affirming care and fostering a supportive, informed community. Visibility plays a pivotal role in dismantling stigma and combating misinformation, and supportive community environments are crucial in safeguarding mental health and well-being.

By promoting transgender visibility through initiatives such as this PSA, we aim to educate the broader public, inspire empathy, and drive community action toward ensuring equitable access to lifesaving resources and care.

Today, we encourage you to watch our PSA, share it widely, and help amplify the call for supportive communities and accessible gender-affirming care. Together, we can build a community that not only respects but uplifts and celebrates all identities.

Join us in standing visibly and vocally for the transgender community—because lives depend on it.
