The Mosaic Center opens its doors November 18

The Mosaic Center, a home for the Coastal Bend’s LGBTQIA+ community at 1010 S Staples St, opens its doors with an open house on Wednesday, November 18, from 5 to 9 p.m. It’s free and open to everyone. Come see the space, meet the people behind its programs, and help shape what happens here next.

Built by volunteers

Since late September, volunteers have turned empty rooms into a place ready for people. They painted every room in bright color, cleared the grounds, opened up the electrical, replaced lights and locks, and set up the front office and lobby. A handmade picnic table already sits on the patio, and the lumber for a performance stage is on site.

What happens here

The Center brings the programs of The Mosaic Project of South Texas together under one roof:

  • Radio. Unity 89.1 FM is moving its studio into the Center. The FCC has approved the move, and the studio, transmitter and emergency alert system are being built now.
  • History. Our Community Lives, our LGBTQIA+ oral-history archive, recorded its first interview at the Center in October, with Vanessa Edwards Foster.
  • Wellness. Free affirming therapy support groups, in partnership with Strengthening Wellness, Counseling & Consultation.
  • Support. The Transgender Resource Initiative, in partnership with Coastal Bend Trans Alliance.
  • Art. Art Lab for Teens, our monthly creative workshops for LGBTQIA+ youth and allies with K Space Contemporary.
  • Business. The Collective, our LGBTQIA+ chamber of commerce, is coming soon and will meet and host at the Center.

Markets, events and a stage

We’re planning the Center as a place to gather, not just a set of offices. The lot will be available for community use, hosting events like vendor markets, food trucks and more, so local makers and LGBTQIA+-owned businesses can set up and meet their neighbors. The Unity 89.1 FM recording studio will be available to the community too. More information will be shared in the weeks ahead. The performance stage will give local performers a home of their own. A community mural is next, and the artist call is open now.
